About the Speaker:

Mark grew up in rural New Hampshire on a small family farm and started a beehive without much success. After high school, Mark attended college in upstate New York receiving an A.S. degree in applied science. Mark then joined the United States Coast Guard. He continued his college studies and attended several advanced schools for military members.  Mark spent his career in Health Care, treating the sick and responding to emergency medical calls on land, sea, or air in support of Coast Guard Missions. Mark also passed his nursing boards and received his L.P.N license. Mark is also a retired CT Police Officer having served Connecticut residents for 33 years.

On his release from active duty after 12 years, Mark became aware of the severe decline in the Honeybee populations and took up beekeeping again; to give a little back to Mother Nature.  Having spent a career diagnosing and treating people, Mark began learning about the many health issues facing the honey bee. He has completed the following courses:

  • Master Beekeeper, Montana State University
  • Advanced Beekeeping, Eastern Apicultural Association
  • Beekeeping, North Carolina State University
  • Queen Rearing Basics, Dr. Larry Connor

In addition, Mark has attended many honeybee lectures throughout the Northeastern United States and has assembled a large beekeeping library. Connecticut

In May of 2012, Mark was selected as CT Connecticut’s Apiary Inspector and is employed at The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven, CT. New Haven, CT. His duties are to examine honeybees and apiaries for infections caused by parasites, bacteria, and other microorganisms. Duties include, but are not limited to opening hives, collecting honeybees, examining specimens in the laboratory, assisting beekeepers, promoting good beekeeping practices and public relations, including speaking to the public.

In October 2014, Mark was awarded Beekeeper of the Year by the Connecticut Beekeepers Association and has been a frequent speaker at Bee Schools in CT.
