NewBee Fundamentals/Special Topics

  • Tuesday, March 15, 2022
  • 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
  • Virtual Only

Registration is closed

This month’s NewBee Fundamentals and Special Topics discussion groups will both be held on March 15th. We hope you enjoyed last month’s format, with the two meetings happening on different evenings.  But we also want to try having the two meetings on the same evening, sequentially.  6:30 will be NewBee Fundamentals, touching on areas of interest to the beginning beekeeper at this time of year, and a fully open forum for Q & A.  7:30 will be Special Topics, focusing on similar (or maybe different) seasonal concepts in more depth and detail.  You are welcome to attend either or both sessions.

NewBee Fundamentals - for the beginning beekeeper.  Discussions, strategies, and Q&A about your honey bees.

Location: Virtual meeting, please register for Zoom link

Buckets and bags hanging from trees collecting America’s own sweetener, maple sap. Maple sap is a sure sign of spring’s arrival and the soon to appear maple blooms. These maple blooms along with the diverse blooms of the trees in the forest and lawns make up most of the massive spring flow. Along with this large food resource is the expansion of  bee colonies.

In warmer climates this expansion is months earlier and supplemented for massive amounts of bees for packages.  These packages then get shipped to other states for new beekeepers.

A package of bees with roughly 10,000 insects and a new beekeeper - what could go wrong? That’s why New Bees and Special Topics will spend so much time on the subject.

This month: Package pickup, package installation, handling the queen
cage, queen release, feeding a new package, record-keeping.

Come join us for a timely discussion and multiple answers to your questions.

Special Topics - for the advancing beekeeper.  Seasonal issues and
problems will be examined.  Meetings will typically feature a brief talk
by the facilitator followed by Q&A and interactive discussion of topics
brought by participants.

This month: Assessment and care of dead-outs, pretreating package bees, sourcing a new queen, queen introduction, queen rejection, feeding overwintered colonies, feeding new packages installed on drawn comb, feed or not pollen.

Veteran beekeepers are encouraged to attend and share your wisdom!
