Depending on the temperatures, there may or may not be many opportunities to take the cover off the hives. And removing frames to inspect brood, bees, and stores may not be in the cards. We’ll talk about what we can do in this final phase of the season for the bees from just the top or from the outside of the hive. And we’ll take some time to review the season and talk about what sort of plans a beekeeper might mull over when the days are their shortest and we wait for spring.
Now that the bees have assumed their winter configuration, the beekeeper can do little inside the hive. However, external preparations and insulation applications can help ensure survival. We will review the pros and cons of insulation versus ventilation. Early winter is also an excellent time to review your past season successes and failures. Winter is also the time to evaluate your equipment needs for the coming year, plan for purchases of bees, and build equipment. We will discuss winter maintenance and how to decide on the configuration of your yard in the coming spring. Hope to see you all there.
