Frosty mornings and sunny days, leaves falling, the last of the flowers fading or already gone. Long about now I conduct my bee work from a mindset of “if this were my last visit with these bees before the snow flies, have I done my best for them?” It’s hard to know how many more opportunities there will be to check in and lend a hand. We’ll talk in detail about winter feeding and hive insulation. This session will be largely review of the topics from the last couple of months, with more than usual open discussion and Q & A.
As the leaves change color and assume their golden mantle for the fall, the bees finalize their winter stores. As the beekeeper, you should make your final preparations for the long winter, including a last-minute mite treatment. The falling temperatures will limit opportunities for feeding liquid syrup. However, there are ways of ensuring food throughout the long winter by using solid sugar patties. We will discuss feeding options and mite treatments. Hope to see you all there.
