NewBee Fundamentals

It won’t be long now until not-yet beekeepers become first-time beekeepers.  We’ll talk about the final round of preparations to be made before packages start arriving, with plenty of time for Q&A.  For those coming out of winter, we’ll touch on what to do with bees that are still among the living, as well as what to do if the colony has perished.

Special Topics

March is a transitional month both for the weather and brood rearing in the colony. This month will likely offer times when you can begin inspecting. Our discussion will focus on the appropriate temperature and duration of inspections and how you can tell if you will need to apply supplemental feed. The other unfortunate task during March is the cleaning of dead-outs. We will discuss the appropriate way to clean and inspect a dead colony, plus how and when you can reuse the comb. Also, bring your report on what's blooming in your area.
